Assignment #1 - Due Thursday, February 8th

There is a fictitious job description stored in a file named techsup.txt on the public file servers. You will need to be in one of the public clusters on campus to access it. If you are using a Macintosh, you will find it in the Course Specific folder on the Macintosh Applications drive. If you are using Windows 98, you will need to go to the My Computer window and open the disk whose name begins with the word Free. Once you get to either place, look for a folder named CS Honors and within it you’ll see a folder named Assign1. The techsup.txt file should be within this folder. Copy the techsup.txt file to your floppy diskette and rename it jobdesc.txt. Open the file using Notepad or SimpleText, read it, and print out a copy.

Using either Notepad or SimpleText, create a text-only resume which you would feel comfortable using to apply for this job. Although I do not intend to check your references, the idea here is that you’ll create an actual resume for yourself which you might use in the future. Obviously, you will most likely want to format it before using it in the real world, but for now work within the limits of a text file. That means you will need to limit your formatting to spaces and blank lines. You will find a tremendous wealth of resume-writing guidance at the Quintessential Career and Job-Hunting Resources Guide and a nice summary at Resume Magic. Print a copy of the finished resume and save a copy onto a floppy diskette in a file named resume.txt.

Scan your floppy diskette for viruses and print a copy of the scanning report.

Login to your cisunix account and use pine to send an e-mail message to me at amgilder@cs.unh.edu. In the body of the message, tell me:

  • your computer experience;
  • whether you intend to use the public clusters, your own computer, or a friend or employer’s computer as the primary place to complete your work for this course;
  • if you intend to use computer outside the clusters, as much as you can about it and how it is connected to the Internet (if at all);
  • what you hope to get out of the course; and
  • a short “codename” I can use to post your grades anonymously.
  • Create a folder on your floppy diskette named Assign1 and move your files from this assignment into that folder. Print out the window displaying the contents of this folder. If you need instructions, they are available for both Windows 98 and the Macintosh.

    Submit the labeled printouts and floppy diskette (don't forget to keep a backup copy) in your envelope.
